Best Conference?

There's been a big debate over this, from SI covers to newspapers. One article a few weeks ago argued for the SEC, in my opinion, the Pac-10 is. But of course that's because I'm an Oregon fan.

I thought this thread was necessary, and this place seems a bit in need of a thread like this.

Yeah.

Re: Best Conference?

It's kind of hard to know for sure since so many teams avoid any non-conference challenges. The SEC has a total of 1 win against a ranked team from another conference(Alabama over Virginia Tech). The only other SEC team to play a ranked team was Georgia, and they lost to Oklahoma State, not exactly a convincing argument for the SEC to say the least. Georgia still has Georgia Tech and South Carolina still has Clemson to play.

The Pac 10 is the only BCS conference to have really tested themselves out of conference and have mixed results. Washington lost to LSU and Notre Dame in close games, Arizona lost to Iowa, USC beat Ohio State and Notre Dame, Oregon lost to Boise State and beat Utah, Oregon State lost to Cincinnati, Stanford will play Notre Dame, Washington State lost to Notre Dame. Pac 10 plays a total of 10 ranked teams in non-conference games and the SEC plays only 4 ranked teams in non-conference games.

SEC teams played a total of 11 games against FCS schools, Mississippi has 2 such games. Pac 10 played a total of 3 FCS schools. SEC plays a total of 14 non-conference BCS teams, the Pac 10 plays 15 BCS teams including Notre Dame.

Keep in mind that there are only 10 teams in the Pac 10 and they only play 3 non-conference games per year, so half were against BCS opponents and 2 more were against ranked Boise State and Utah for a total of 17 out of 30 non-conference games against quality opponents. There are 12 SEC teams that play 4 non-conference games each, so only 14 of 48 non-conference games were quality opponents.

It's difficult to prove the SEC is as good as they say they are when they fail to go out of conference and prove it on a regular basis. This story is repeated every year, but we know we can count on the SEC fans pointing out how they get 9 teams into a bowl game without acknowledging they didn't really play anyone.

Don't you think the reason that teams in a conference such as the pac 10 schedule tougher non conference games is because they HAVE to!! They are in a weaker conference so in order to boost points they have to put tougher teams that are out of their conference on the schedule.
The reason SEC plays a soft non conference schedule is because they CAN as the conference schedule is well enough to earn them points.

What would make people happy? Have Florida play S.Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas, Kentucky and Ol' Miss. as the conference games then put FSU, Penn. St., Texas and USC as the non-conference games?.Then play the SEC championship game?? They wouldn't have any players at the end of the year!!

I know everyone loves their conference but how can anyone say a conference like the Pac 10 with Oregon, Arizona, Stanford, Cal, USC, Oregon St, Arizona St, Washington, Washington St. and UCLA is a tougher or better conference then the SEC with Florida, S.Carolina, Georgia, Tenn., Kentucky, Vandy, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, ol" miss., miss. st. and Ark.

Re: Best Conference?

This Year im sorry to say it is a All SEC.Ill explain why The Big 12,Pac 10,Acc,Big East,And Big 10 compete every year it usually ends up The Acc Tears them selves apart the Big East has nobody to contend that leaves us with 3 ill go over your Pac 10 this year i like the conference more than my precious Big 12 but i do think if you took out Oregon,Cal,And USC your conference would be nothing for the media to love but this year you guys have a battle for 2nd( as usual ) but im amazed that Arizona is on top pinch my i must be dreaming but for your oregon im pretty sure their spot is reserved the big 10 Penn State has fell, Ohio State Has Fell and Michigan lets just not talk about them but they have Iowa then the story is a mix of the acc and big 10 for the big 12 this year the north has destroyed them selves but they have Texas so i see a possible championshipBut my pick for the best is SEC

The computer rankings also say the Pac 10 is the best this year. Read below the teams and you will find the conference rankings here:

Do you realize how ridiculous this is? Take out 3 of the 10 teams and what? Look at the SEC, take out Florida, Alabama, and LSU and they don't even have a single ranked team. Think before you make posts like this.

Do you really let the computer make your decisions? I understand you are a Pac-10 homer and applaud your loyalty.... But after you look at the SEC team line up and then the Pac 10 line up and if you can honestly in good conscience say the pac 10 is the stronger conference then good for you... Remember I said in good conscience!

As I've stated many times before, I'm a Nebraska fan #1 above all others, but I'm taking classes at Arizona. But yes, I see the Pac 10 from 1 through 9 stronger than any other conference. Washington State is horrible, but then so is Vanderbilt. It also doesn't escape me that UCLA is 0-5 in the Pac 10 but has a win at Tennessee.

Re: Best Conference?

Oh, glad to see it generated some conversation.

The Pac-10 this year is very strong - WSU sucks, but all the other schools are good, take a bottom Washington for example. They gave LSU a hard fought game, as well as basically beating Notre Dame - the refs acknowledged they made a few wrong calls. They upset an obvious power house, USC. It shows you anything can happen in the Pac, such as Stanford when they were horrible beating USC at USC, what, last year? It shows the depth they have, no team is weak (well, WSU is kinda bad) in the Pac-10, even Stanford that was like a 36 point underdog. Oregon perfects, and is one of the few to, the spread offense. USC is always up there in the ranking, they're consistent that way. UCLA beat Tennessee earlier in the year, I believe (or was it last year?), who nearly beat "#3" Alabama. Looking at the SEC - meh, Florida and Alabama got very, very lucky not to get upset. All those teams got lucky. Oregon, recently, has been killing everyone they play, even USC.

k.

Great topic Wittleboy and nice to see another Duck fan on the forum. Most of the college football fans are from the Southeast from what I have observed so we are outnumbered... Its all good though.

I actually can say with a full conscience that the PAC 10 overall is as good this year or possibly better top to bottom than the SEC. No bias here, last year I would have said this too (PAC 10 5-0) bowl games. 2006 and 2007 were down years for the PAC 10 when SEC was by far the best.

This is all speculation of course and you never know for sure until SEC and PAC 10 start playing each other more often. There is no bowl tie-ins at all with the PAC 10 and SEC so they cannot ever meet in the bowl games unless it is for a championship. This is unfortunate. Very few non-league games are played with them either. I think desertrat made the same arguments I would have.

I look forward to Oregon playing at Tennessee next year and Georgia in the next few years.

Isn't it a real far airplane ride from say Florida to Washington or Georgia to Oregon... I mean these kids are still students going to class right?

Re: Best Conference?

well life goes on a couple hours longer in a airplane is just a couple hours longer for the players to get pumped its like what they say the better teams you play the better you get now im not saying Georgia and Tennessee are good teams ( because they arent) im saying having SEC PAC 10 match ups could be a good thing.
